Feature - Implemented Indicator for dusty wine to pour is confusing

I didn't have a problem with this due to following this forum, but I've seen quite a few people say that the *** next to the bottle that needs to be poured isn't very clear. More occurrences than most noticeable bugs, probably. It isn't in that form, it's generally "why did mafia take away that feature?" I expect that once I tell people how it works now, they get it and won't have any problem, but there are probably a lot of people that never investigate and think it's just gone. Maybe that could be changed to say "(pour this one)" instead.

I suppose. I experimented a bit when I changed it from numbering the wines "1st" "2nd" and "3rd" since I recall seeing a bunch of complaints from people about THAT being unclear - especially since it requires you to remember which step you are on; having poured 1 wine, why does it still say "1st" and if I don't have the second wine, why is that other one marked "3rd" and if I come back with another wine and one is now marked "2nd", where was I again?

The current implementation of distinguishing at most one wine - the correct one to pour NOW - is clearly better.

What I really wanted was to have the correct wine in bold or something, but apparently bold tags don't work in an HTML dropdown. I guess "(pour this one)" could work.

Perhaps there could just be a Solve button when you have the right wines to complete the pourings (user may have already correctly poured some)?
Add an ordered list of the three bottles you need before the drop down?

Yeah, I have no ideas on the best way to go about it, but the old way made intuitive sense to me, at least. The first time I saw the new way, I figured something must have broke; and I'm not alone (the same idea was expressed on a recent MONKEY radio show).

Perhaps a "Pour all the Wines!" button that gets greyed-out with title text saying "You don't have all the necessary wines" when appropriate?

Would it be possible to just get a "pour wines" option? I know it's not a major thing, but we have modifications to Sven and other sections to save a few clicks and time here and there.

True. However, adding a style or class attribute to the option tag should work.
It SHOULD work, as you say, but in Safari, at least, it does not. I just tried adding style="font-weight:bold;color=green" to the appropriate option. It ended up being neither bold nor green.

Huh. Well ... you could add "disabled" to all but the correct option, I guess. Or even remove all but the correct one. Although I am perfectly content with the "***", myself.

It seems to me that all that's needed is some extra explanatory text somewhere outside of the dropdown. Maybe a change to an arrow.

Wines (arrowed one is currently needed):
1st: blah1
2nd: blah2 <---
3rd: blah3

In my view, I did as lost suggested: I put (pour this one) instead of ***. I considered saying "(pick me! pick me!)" It looked clear enough. Maybe "-->dusty bottle of phlegm<--" would also work.

Obviously I'm not the right choice to decide what is intuitive, because I still think that *** should have made people think "huh. this is different than other wines. Maybe I should use this one", rather than, apparently, "KoLmafia isn't distinguishing the wines for me in any way anymore to help me decide what to pour. Well, that one has ***, and I never saw that in KoL, but it must be a mirage or something."

I'll probably just submit the (pour this one) version, by and by. It IS instructions in English.

I must admit that, at first, I was completely stumped by this. Had it been my first time using mafia, in hindsight, I would probably have figured it out no problem. However, being used to the "1st, 2nd, 3rd" made me completely go braindead. After about a minute of thought, however, it made sense what was going on and actually felt more intuitive than the old numbering system.

While the English doesn't hurt, it's (probably, I haven't seen it in action yet) bulky. "->" seems like it'd be more explanatory at first glance than "***" though.

One thing I've always thought would be rather nifty would be, similar to what was suggested above about disabling all the "wrong" wines, is to just alter the page such that when it loads, the default option is the correct wine rather than the "select a wine" option.

Though, if you're just going to add a "pour all the wines" button then it's really not necessary.

Easily done - and if you don't have the correct wine, we could make the default be (go get a dusty bottle of xxx).

I sort of like that: the dropdown shows all the wines you have, if you have the correct one, we select it and say (pour this one) and if you don't have the correct one, we say (go get the correct one).

Revision 10850 attempts the following (untested):

If you have some of the correct wine in inventory, it will select it and change the name to "-->dusty bottle of phlegm<--".
If you don't have the correct wine, it selects none and changes the default from "- select a bottle -" to "(you need a dusty bottle of phlegm)"

I don't actually use the word phlegm.

Just tested this unsuccessfully. It doesn't do the "(you need a dusty bottle of phlegm)" part of the change.

Code:
> dusty

dusty bottle of Merlot: vinegar (Full of Vinegar)
dusty bottle of Port: bad wine
dusty bottle of Pinot Noir: average wine
dusty bottle of Zinfandel: great wine
dusty bottle of Marsala: spooky wine (Kiss of the Black Fairy)
dusty bottle of Muscat: glassy wine

My necessary wines are Muscat (glyph5), Port (glyph6) & Pinot Noir (glyph1).

I'm only missing the Port when I click on the pedestal. It highlights the Muscat and annotates it correctly. After pouring it selects "- select a bottle -" as previously. "(you need a dusty bottle of Port)" isn't even on the list.

I'll leave this quest uncompleted until after rollover in case you need me to test it again.

Here's the page html, in case it helps:

I can't wait to get to that point and check out the new styling. I like that better than having the other options removed, just in case someone really wants to poison themselves for some reason.

Personally, I generally get all the wines before pouring any, so I wouldn't mind some sort of Solve! button, but this is fine.
