Lots of tedious stepping through code in Eclipse revealed the issue.

I just couldn't see how it was possible that the fight would not abort when KoLmafia was in an ABORT state. The answer was that KoLmafia didn't go into an ABORT state.

The "dedication" came when I ran away from the Protector Spectre and added 1 turn to my run. *gasp*
