If it helps anyone debug this, I acquired an unknown item while pvp-ing today. I was using the cli, so I can only get the html from the archives, but here's what happened:
A you can see I obtained a new item: "Ereinion gained fame:", but no serrated proboscis extension as far as I can tell.
I have "Automatically fast-forward all PvP fights" and "Use compact PvP mode" checked in the in-game options, though I'm not sure either of those would have affected the outcome? Anyway, the html from the archived fight is:
