OK, this was weird. I just noticed, when testing another bug, that my grouper groupie was being told she wasn't as fat as she really was. I looked back in the session log, and found this discrepency.
I started the day with Sympathy, Empathy, and Leash (+5 lbs each) and Familial Ties (+10 lbs underwater). I added Green Tongue (for the exp gain, but also gave another +5 lbs). I then brought in my unused-this-run 1lb groupie, and the session log reports:
"familiar Grouper Groupie (26 lbs)"
(She was wearing gill rings (+5 lbs), though I immediately swapped them with the LBoF (also +5 lbs))
I then added Crocodile Tear (+10 lbs underwater), and went adventuring in the relay browser, which showed her as 26 lbs; the relay browser doesn't show underwater bonuses.
In the first battle, against a mer-kin miner, she gained a pound and 7 exp (+1 Heart of White, +1 Tarrypin, +2 Corsican, +2 Green Tongue); she did not fire off a roman candle, and she got the +item bonus instead of the +exp bonus from the LBoF. Session log shows:
"Your familiar gains a pound: Pamela, the -18 lb. Grouper Groupie"
So, by this point, my 1 lb (now 2 lb) groupie had apparently been given a -20 lb adjustment. I was playing in the relay browser, so I don't know if the main interface showed her as 47 lbs or 27 lbs (though I'd wager the latter) at this time.
I realized this when I was testing a hidden familiar weight bug and went to the main interface to switch my location to the Giant's Castle; I noticed my grouper was listed as 39 lbs (her weight without underwater bonuses) while my location was the Anemone Mine, and when I switched to the Giant's Castle, her weight in the main interface was listed as just 19 pounds.
When I did a "modtrace familiar weight" in the gCLI, it listed the effects, and under the chart it stated:
"Adjusting familiar weight by -20 pounds"
I then used sea grease, and the gCLI showed:
"You acquire an item: sea grease
You acquire an effect: Greased-Up Familiar (duration: 40 Adventures)
Adjusting familiar weight by -5 pounds"
...and my groupie was now shown as 14 lbs in the main interface at the Giant's Castle, or 34 lbs at the Anemone Mine. I did a "refresh all" in the gCLI, and the main interface display was corrected (39 lbs at the Castle, 64 lbs at the Anemone Mine.)
What would have caused this adjustment of the familiar weight?
