special characters in ASH

What's the best way to handle special characters in ASH? I have some code that handles frigid hankyū but I'm getting a bad item value.

Bad item value: "frigid hankyū"

The easiest way to handle it is just to trust in mafia's pattern matcher and use $item[frigid hanky]
