print() writing to the session log?

Is it just me or does print() not write messages to the session logfile, just to the gcli output ...

Is there a way to write special messages into the session logfile? I try to use print() to mark the start and end of functions and/or decision trees for debugging, but sometimes I can't watch the gcli output and I was hoping to be able to go into the session log for the day and find out what happened and why it didn't happen like I wanted/thought it should.
