Kol-mafia started crashing recently.

At random times while I'm using the relay browser(firefox), all other mafia windows will close and whatever I was doing on relay browser will timeout. It spits out a debug log every time this happens, in the mafia directory...

Code:

This is, almost assuredly, a java issue, not a mafia issue. Specifically how java works with certain types of security software.

You are probably running a bit of software that does Data Execution Protection (aka DEP), be that a "Security Center" type of antivirus (McAfee or Norton being the usual suspects) or microsoft's DEP, which can be enabled if you have installed certain security settings in IE7 or ever installed IE8. Here is some info on that.

http://forums.java.net/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=54296&tstart=0

You may need to turn off those functions in Windows or work with your antivirus/security program provider to whitelist or mark mafia as safe.

Good luck.

Thanks for the quick reply, Dangerpin...and thanks for all the daily builds. ;D

I'm running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3, and the entire security center+alerts are turned off. I do not own/use any sort of anti-virus software, and I haven't used my spyware/adware softwar(spybot S&D and Ad-Aware) for at least a year...I've been working with PCs for years, and never really needed things like that. The only background software running is Spybot's TeaTimer...basically a process blacklister, but nothing related to java nor mafia is on the blacklist...I am able to identify everything that is on that list.

As for IE, I have a pre-IE7 version and won't ever upgrade. I use FireFox 3.x.x for everything but windows udpate. Long answer short...the info and link you provided doesn't seem to apply to me. :(

Ok, now that we know that you don't have adequate protection from virus and malware, the tech side of me says the first thing we need to do is remove that concern before moving forward.

The first thing I would do is download a trial copy of NOD32 by Eset and do a full scan for viruses. http://www.eset.com/download/free_trial_download.php

Then if your version of Spybot is 1.6 or above, you can start a full scan with that as a canary-in-a-coal-mine for problems, though either way I would probably do a scan with a more in-depth scanner like SuperAntiSpyware. Both of these can be found at filehippo.com

If that finds and fixes, you probably want to hit it with ComboFix, directions for using that and the links to the daily of that can be found here.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

If that turns up nothing, you might think about reinstalling your java components. The error you are getting is from java itself, and variations of it are sometimes seen where there are modifications to the java code, injections or damage within java or where it is being blocked by a program.

Both issues with java, security apps and malware fit the bill for this type of error. Since security software is out, I would work to rule out the other two.

My understanding is that the LocalRelayAgent is the component within Mafia that handles the hashing of passwords, which is just the golden ring I would be trying to grab if I was a bit of malware.

I'll give those steps a try, but I'm fairly certain that nothing will be found. I've been doing my own system monitoring for years, which pretty much made anti-whatever software obsolete to me. I'm also the only person with access to this pc, or my entire mini-network for that matter. I kept ad-ware and spybot around because it's what I use for PC house-calls to clean up customer computers, and they do a great job of cleaning out cookies for me.

I'll post a reply with the results of the various scans I'm about to do. I also updated java last night, probably should have mentioned that...the crashes stopped for a little while and then came back.

Hotspot 11.0-b16 is part of the 1.6.0_11 version of java that just came out a few days ago, so thanks for letting me know that. I had wondered if the issue had started with the upgrade or if you had installed it while attempting to fix. From your savvy-ness I had assumed the latter, but nice to have confirmation.

My only question concerning that is did you uninstall ALL the older versions of java before installing the latest??

The final question I have is, which daily version approximately did the problem start with?

I did not remove prior java software when I ran the update from the java website. The last time java was updated was several months ago. I believe I had build 8.

As for the daily build...I don't recall exactly which version I was using, but I know it was at least 1-2 months old. The crashing didn't start until about 2-3 days ago.

I ran scans with spybot and ad-aware, found some tracking cookies...which don't pose any sort of threat. Ad-aware doubles as a decent virus scanner, and still didn't catch anything.

EDIT: So I made it a few hours without a crash, thinking something changed and everything is good to go. As I was pulling minimum price items from my mall store via the "take all" link in relay browser, to auto-sell stuff, mafia crashed. It seems this crash and the last 5 or 6 crashes happened while I was doing that same task. This time the debug log it spit out is much longer, so it may prove to be of some help if it has any detailed info. It's a bit lengthy...

I tried to recreate your issue. I added a bunch of items to my store, pulled them via the relay browser and autosold a few. I had no problems.

The idea that Ad-aware (a once great antispyware product that has fallen from grace) makes "a decent virus scanner", makes reason stare, but I will put that aside for the moment.

If I were rule out malware my next steps would be to uninstall all java, run a good registry cleanup, like the one built into ccleaner to remove any old references.

If that didn't work, I assume you have already tried running mafia from a fresh folder to rule out lingering update files and the like.

If you still saw the problem I would try setting my default browser to IE to rule out a bad interaction with Firefox extensions and add-ons.

Past that I am out of ideas, you say you monitor your computers, if you had any active monitoring programs that might cause a timeout issue in mafia I would disable those for testing.

Good luck!

I actually never thought of running mafia from a clean folder, that should have been the first step! Haha.

I'll try that, and if it doesn't work then I'll clear out java/clean registry again/re-install java and see what that does. I'll be sure to post whatever fixes the problem so if anyone else has the same issue, we can probably help them solve it.

As for ad-aware, it definitely isn't what it use to be...I'll admit that, but it does do a good job of catching everything from adware/malware to many TAC10 viruses that other adware scanners don't catch. Works even better when paired up with spybot, they usually catches what the other misses. I'd consider getting an anti-virus just for the heck of it, but I wouldn't even know where to start...last I remember, F-Prot was the way to go. I'm talking the sub-7 era, was probably the last time I used anything and it was only to find out if my binded sub7 server files could be detected. :-X

EDIT: To better explain what my actions are when the crash happens...

My mall store had maybe 20-30 items for sale, above minimum sale price. The rest if the items that sell for minimum price stay at 999999999, so that way I can go to manage my mall store and know which ones to pull in order to auto-sell. One at a time, starting at the top and working my way down, I click "take all" on each item priced at 999999999 until there are none left. Every time, after maybe 10 items, kol-mafia will crash...main window and any other window will close out, and the relay browser will lead to a timeout since it's obviously no longer connected. The actual action of putting items in store, or auto-selling them, doesn't lead to a crash...only when I'm pulling them from the store.

F-Prot is still the best. You have to pay for a subscription, but it's worth it. Also, the personal license is OK to use on up to five computers. I have three, which let me use the other two as gifts.

You know, when I first got into the industry F-Prot for DOS was amazing. Nice to see that some things remain fairly consistent. Still I would have to go with NOD32 from ESET. You actually picked a good day to try to figure out which AV to buy.

From Slashdot this morning

AV-Comparatives, the Austrian team of experts dedicated to antivirus tests acknowledged as a reference point in the field, has published the second part of the mid-year comparative, an ideal addendum to the one already released last September. This time the aim is to evaluate the antimalware tools' effectiveness against unknown threats in a test scenario meant to prove the heuristic part and the generic markers of the on-demand scanning engines." The best in show (of 16 anti-malware packages evaluated), Avira AntiVir was able to find 71% of the unknown malware it was exposed to in the first week, dropping to 67% after the fourth.

http://www.av-comparatives.org/index.html click Comaparatives.

Though if you read the full article, NOD32 was rated at the highest certification level because of the high rate of false positives in Avira. F-Prot rated very high on plain viruses but not well at all on other types of threats.

Also the 30 day free trial is great for cleaning up a remote or home user computer while they decide what they want to pay for and keep them protected until they get it.

I will try to recreate your issue again with more items all being removed.

*Edit-I basically recreated your scenario with no issues. I don't currently have a pastamancer with a custom title, but I don't think that would enter into it.

Thanks for the info guys. I'd love to get back in to F-Prot, but money is tight this season due to lack of work(thanks for nothing, you crappy economy)...so adding another bill to the mix isn't one of my options at this time. I miss the times where money was coming in just a tad bit faster than it was going out!

As for re-creating the problem...I'll try to get it to happen again, and see if there's any variables I missed or forgot to mention. What I explained in my last edit seems to cover it fairly well, and at this point I'd say it's a problem on my end if you didn't have the same issue after several attempts.

I only had a small handful of items to use for testing after I cleared out the mafia folder and ran the new daily build from scratch, so no issues yet. Hopefully that fixed the problem.

F-Prot was not included in their tests since 2007. Wonder why... The reason I love it is its small memory footprint and no-bother operation... you barely even notice you're running it. Many AV programs (especially the free ones or anything that comes in a "suite") take up more of your system resources than the viruses/malware they are supposed to prevent.

Haven't used NOD32, but I'd trust Danger's recommendations.

I'm betting your problem doesn't come back after running in a fresh dir.

As for the economy... come over to Korea and teach English with me! You make a decent chunk and there's always demand. :)

Teaching english in Korea? Dang, I always did want to work a good job overseas...just not sure the 'ol lady would be on board with that idea. It'd be a lot safer than my original plan of joining a contract mercenary company, after I was turned down by the Marines due to past health. :-\

Because that is when it F-Secure became the product they wanted tested, if I remember correctly.

Problem still exists...I got to the third item "take all" button, and then crash.

Right before this happened, the relay browser's fonts changed. Most of it is really hard to read now...did I accidentally do this, or what? Is there a way to fix it? FireFox's default font settings are the same as they were before, it's just the relay browser having the font issue.

Try hitting CTL+0 to see if you accidently zoomed. CTL+ scroll button will do the same.

If you have a backup you can restore the

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

Which translates to C:\Documents and Settings\YOURusernameHERE\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default

...directory to get your old settings back.

You can see if it is a profile issue, check your profiles with Mozilla closed at the run type

firefox.exe -ProfileManager

Also, check this out...

It was the ctrl+scroll wheel that did it. I was quickly hitting ctrl+v and I guess my hand was on the mouse and bumped the wheel. I was able to get everything back to normal by simply doing it again. Thanks!

Unfortunately I'm still getting a crash if I'm doing repeated actions in relay browser, especially the mall store stuff I mentioned in an earlier post. Hopefully that issue will disappear as quickly as it appeared, because I just can't seem to figure out what's causing it. :-\

Then if your version of Spybot is 1.6 or above, you can start a full scan with that as a canary-in-a-coal-mine for problems, though either way I would probably do a scan with a more in-depth scanner like SuperAntiSpyware. Both of these can be found at filehippo.com

I tried SAS and had a lot of false positives. Interesting looking product. I like Spybot S&D a lot. Long time user of it.

Nice postings though about some of the other options out there and thanks for the AV comparative.

I am a longtime user of AVG. Not really happy with all of the bloat added in since AVG7. :-/
