at least for hardcore and normal. casual limiting itself to items in inventory should be fine

I haven't looked at that code in awhile... is there a way to get maximizer lower your familiar weight or does it bail out once it sees that your familiar weight has already exceeded the needed value?

you can type "maximize 20 max, familiar weight" in the cli to tell it to stop
it doesn't work perfectly, of course...
I know hardly anything about how mafia works, so I don't know what's best

Aha, for some reason I was reading this as "familiar trainer" instead of "tower familiars".
