Consider the text log below. I was playing via the relay browser. I have marked the 3 relevant lines where mafia tried to replace my gear mid-combat. The gear interface shows the loss of a belt from the inventory count and considers it re-equipped. A quick check to my character page reveals it is not actually there and the slot is empty.

Round 2: Grot tosses his identity disc at him for 17 damage, then invites you to drink some glowing blue liquid out of the disc. The whole thing's a little more intimate than you're comfortable with, but it's still refreshing.
Round 2: baron von ratsworth takes 17 damage.
You gain 17 Mana Points
You acquire an item: Baron von Ratsworth's monocle
You gain 8 Strengthliness
You gain 12 Enchantedness
You can now equip a baconstone bracelet (and possibly other things).
You gain a Mysticality point!
You gain 5 Smarm
