Looking at the code (as I don't have that familiar), it appears that you'd get that result with anything you try to equip on a Comma Chameleon, other than nothing. Looks like things are deliberately set to not let you use this command for Comma Chameleon. Anyone with more history know why ?

Possibly to prevent unintended item loss from automatic equipping (maximizer, ...)?

Comma chameleon support has never been implemented; what's in place is simply to protect the user from accidentally consuming familiar equipment.
