Over in one corner, you find some fragments of rotten wooden boards that look to have been part of a bookcase crushed by falling stone. The hinges protest as you try to open the box, but you do manage to wrench it open, revealing a grotesque but friendly-looking shrunken head wearing the traditional gold hoop earring of the Navigators' Guild. It blinks in the light as you lift it up by its scraggly blond hair, and grins.

Choice 702 - Encounter: No Corn, Only Thorns
North

The correct choice is random each time. The shrunken navigator head will indicate the route through. You'll then fight the conservationish hippy, which is a once per ascension fight.

source:
Code:
<table><tr><td><div></div><p>Off in the distance, you can see what can only be the Great Tree that Marty was talking about. It grows straight and tall in the middle of the swamp, and it almost seems like the other trees are so gnarled and twisted because of shame.<p>As you begin to head toward it, though, an eerie howl starts up from somewhere nearby -- a stream of angry rhythmic gibberish that must be one of the beaver shamans (shamen? whatever). The voice is joined by another, and another, and as the noise starts to get really annoying, a thick wall of thorny brambles suddenly sprouts out of the ground.<p>You turn to find a similar impenetrable wall behind you, but fortunately you aren't boxed in -- there's a passage heading off to one side. You follow the path for a ways, and come to an intersection; it appears that the beavers have grown a thorny hedge maze around you. <p>I guess it was considerate of them to trap you in a maze instead of just a box? Or to just crush you with solid brambles. Seems a bit extravagant, though.<center><form name=choiceform1 action=choice.php method=post><input type=hidden name=pwd value='524938720e93ad9b2e008ec1c2879264'><input type=hidden name=whichchoice value=702><input type=hidden name=option value=1><input class=button type=submit value="Go north."></form><form name=choiceform2 action=choice.php method=post><input type=hidden name=pwd value='524938720e93ad9b2e008ec1c2879264'><input type=hidden name=whichchoice value=702><input type=hidden name=option value=2><input class=button type=submit value="Go east."></form><form name=choiceform3 action=choice.php method=post><input type=hidden name=pwd value='524938720e93ad9b2e008ec1c2879264'><input type=hidden name=whichchoice value=702><input type=hidden name=option value=3><input class=button type=submit value="Go south."></form><form name=choiceform4 action=choice.php method=post><input type=hidden name=pwd value='524938720e93ad9b2e008ec1c2879264'><input type=hidden name=whichchoice value=702><input type=hidden name=option value=4><input class=button type=submit value="Go west."></form></center></td></tr></table></center></td></tr><tr><td height=4></td></tr></table>

Stuff we could still do with :

More spading on ranges for consumables, combat items and the stolen meatpouch - consumables update above.

Text from using the shrunken navigator head in the maze, as I'm sure people will want to be able to automate the maze, and I didn't get this, foolishly - done below.

Item drop spading. I was running +145% items and missed just about everything, so I think all drop rates are 40% or below.

More meat drop spading on the once per ascension monsters, as only have 2 datapoints here, so it's an educated guess.

Quest reward Sword and Staff stats - staff and sword below.

Text from the Navigator head:

First time: You take the shrunken navigator head out of your pack and hold him up by his hair. He spins around for a bit, then comes to rest facing north.

Second time: You hold up the navigator head again. This time, he spins around to face west.

Third time: Your shrunken navigator head buddy rotates to indicate north.

Fourth time: The shunken head turns to face west, and blinks excitedly. Does that mean you're near the exit? You could practically kiss your portable maze-solving friend, except for ick.

Thanks, lost.

Now only the monsters and noncombat choice adventure content remains.

And when you turn those first three into Marty, via specific choice options, you should lose them from inventory.

Revision 12227 adds the 4 quest items. It also adds all the monsters, as a side-effect of Darzil having them in his monster images file - although I had to fix a bunch of syntax errors. ;)

Sorry about the errors. What were my common errors? The ones I know most are a result of a strange side-effect of my working in excel, when you copy and paste it seems to do them in around 10 line blocks. So it'll add tabs to the end of any line with fewer cells than the longest in that 10 line blocks. Thus far I've found it quicker to then delete manually than write a parser to change the file for me. Hopefully after doing that for Init/Phylum and now Images I'll never have to go right through that file again !

Is this the only thing in this thread which is unimplemented?

Also, I believe that you also lose the navigator head when the quest is completed.

And when you turn those first three into Marty, via specific choice options, you should lose them from inventory.

This is more complicated than it should be, since the number corresponding to a choice changes as you remove choices from being available. This means that it should be done based on the button text from before clicking, which seems like preChoice(), except it requires knowing what option was picked, which means postChoice() (1 or 2 shouldn't matter). I'm sure that preChoice() could save the values for use in postChoice(), but that seems wasteful. The wrong way of getting the right result eventually is checking for "That was the last of it" after everything is turned in. Alternatively, an overly complicated approach of checking which item(s) you have and what option you picked would probably do it.

I just grabbed my last factoids from this quest, so I'm not likely to look more into it any time soon.

You can look at the response text to see what he said to deduce what you gave him. Assuming the Wiki is right, he says:

"Marty's eyes widen when you hand him the branch from the Great Tree"
"At first Marty looks disappointed when you hand him the rust-spotted, rotten-handled axe"
"Marty looks delighted when you hand him the bouquet of swamp roses"

I have one factoid left from each of the special critters, so I'll only be through here once more, myself. Since I don't feel like doing it in-run, it'll be tomorrow or the day after. I'll see what I can code up and will test it - once - at that time. I'll put it in postChoice1, I expect.

If anything needs extra testing I plan on doing it soon as well. I can put it off until something needs testing (need to do the sea as well anyway so).

Revision 12236 does this. Untested.

Winterbay, save a debug log when you visit Marty to turn in the items. If I got the text right, everything should be fine and you won't need it, but otherwise, the DEBUG log will help me figure out what I got wrong.

Thanks!
