I could swear forum settings are changing as I post!

One day I'm trying to type & n t i l d e ; (no spaces) and not have it display as the character it represents. The forum made me put spaces in it. Today I was trying to use & l t ; (no spaces) to display the less than character, and it would not work. I could swear while I was trying to get it to work, the way that the forum handles these characters/sequences was changing which led me to even more confusion. Please tell me I am right about this, and I'm not going crazy!

It acts like it converts & to & for you, but in truth it doesn't do that -- it wants YOU to do it every time you edit your post (because when you edit it, it converts the & back to &).
