Later today I will be updating the forums to vBulletin 4, with it we will have some changes to the site which include the builds pages and the bug tracker. At this time I'm going to be going through the bug tracker and closing tickets on all fixed bugs and then making a backup copy of all the bugs that are unresolved. After I've completed that I will update this thread and give an exact time on when the upgrade will be performed.

Any questions feel free to ask!

fewyn

There are more bugs in the tracker than I suspected, I will have to make a read only version of it after the update so they can be imported in.

fewyn
02-28-2010, 07:17 PM
Forums will be switched to read only at 4:00pm EST. Not long afterwords we'll close the site for the upgrade.

Forums are back up, haven't gotten the bug tracker installed yet and the daily builds page is borked which I'm in the process of fixing.

good work fewyn!

vb4 seems very different to any version of vb i've ever used!

Is there anyplace I can get a daily build while the builds page is borked?

No, i've almost got it fixed tho.

There seems to be weird a problem with uploading attachments.

As you'll see here (http://kolmafia.us/showthread.php?1929-Rainbow-Gravitation-made-easy), the attachment's name is "Rainbow Gravitati&.ash" instead of "Rainbow Gravitation.ash".

Any clue why that would be?

fewyn
03-01-2010, 06:17 AM
Get used to this one, and no idea might have to do with some kind of change in the way attachements are stored by name on the server. File looks fine otherwise. I'll have the bug tracker working sometime tomorrow.

Thanks a lot fewyn. I'm sure everyone will get used to it quickly =)

The only thing I'm going to have a hard time with is to not check red icons: a red icon now means the topic is hot, not that there are new posts.

I'm digging the forum; it's all shiny now. I hope the upgrade process hasn't been too painful.

Is it possible to add the old skin back?

mredge73
03-01-2010, 03:27 PM
Echo, I liked the old skin much better because it was much easier on the eyes and new posts were easier to spot.

Anyway, where are the bug reports?
I seem to have misplaced them, I will look around some more.

I think the forum theme looks nice. Just changing the color of the icon for new posts would make it much easier to see as opposed to trying to change the whole theme.

Grotfang
03-01-2010, 03:55 PM
I agree about the difficulty of seeing new posts. The theme is nice, but the fact that it's so light makes the bolded lettering very hard to pick up on. Could the bold be more pronounced, perhaps? Or maybe a deeper colour blue.

Ultimately familiar is always better than different. Sometimes change has to be forced in order to come out the other side :)

Old skin is gone can't be brought back going to work on fixing colours later, as i said earlier bug reports will be back later today.

I agree. In a few months no one will remember what the old skin looked like.

And re. new posts, we just need to get used to looking for the little arrow next to the thread's name instead of the color of the icon.

I think the green arrow means that I have posted to the thread and not that it contains new content. The envelope thingie is open with multiple pieces of paper sticking out of it for new content. See the bottom of that page listing topics for a definition of the icons ;-) In the meantime, I find the What's New tab at the top of the page is helpful.

I agree that the current look is "prettier" overall, but to be honest, I'm getting rather tired of various skins that go for "ooh shiny" over usable. Some of us -- such as myself -- have rather poor eyesight (or color-blindness, not me though on this one), and skins where everything is differentiated by subtle differences in shade are freakin' annoying. (Just to clarify, I'm not blaming this on fewyn, it's more of a "Why are these the defaults on so many new installs" issue.)

The old skin wasn't perfect -- there were a few post status differences that I had a hard time parsing -- but on this one I can barely read the main text inside of a post, never mind trying to tell what posts are new etc.

But yeah, I understand "function" is the first priority. I'd just really like to cast my vote in favor of "plz make readable kthx." ;)

I meant the little blue arrow pointing downwards, next to the red icon.

I just use adblock to block all the symbols that don't mean new thread or stickied/locked thread (for all forums), and then new posts are easy to find.

One thing that I really miss is a quick, visual way to know from the main forum page if there are new unread posts without having to open each forum, or trying to remember the time I last read the forum compared with the last post information.

Thanks!

fewyn

Uh... it works exactly the same Camber. Grey squares or faded squares mean no new posts, blue means new posts. How hard is it?

Well, inside a forum i see the envelopes, etc., but from the main page i see no blue squares next to 'Announcements' indicating there were the above new posts.

Well, at least i know the reason that i am not seeing things. I do understand the frustrations of upgrading an active forum where everyone gives there 'help' on what's wrong with all the new features. I do appreciate you updating and maintaining this resource for the community. I meant no disrespect. i'll just use the "New Posts" as Bale suggested.

Thanks!

BTW fewyn, you're aware that you are missing images/icons/rss-small.png, the RSS Post Icon? There's a whole bunch of absent images in front of every thread in the Latest SVN Changes forum.

Bale

Ummm... the new bug tracker is really weird.

I cannot figure out how it will tell me which reports have new responses.

Adding a new comment to a bug report was... Well, see for yourself: http://kolmafia.us/vbugs.php?do=view&vbug_id=2. I responded to lostcalpolydude, but that's really hard to tell.

Perhaps the old bug tracker was better? Then you could even return our old bug reports.

There's another problem with this update that I'm finding quite vexing.

Could you increase the limit on the length of a file name? It is very troubling for people downloading my script to need to rename it or else it won't work with their current settings for using a recovery script.

Different is a tactful way to put it. :P Seriously though, some alternative skins would be appreciated.

The appearance isn't so bad after I've been using it for a few days. You'll get used to it also.

I'm more concerned with other issues that impact my ability to make use of its features, like the bug tracker and my ability to attach files with a filename of more than 15 characters. That's a problem which may force me to rename my most popular script.

One heck of a lot of Google searching turned up this (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/project.php?issueid=36400). What version of vBulletin are we using? (I know 4, but can we be more specific?) It seems like the problem exists in 4.0.2 but is fixed in 4.0.3.

Nonetheless, it does mention a fix in the thread that I linked to. (recreated below for easier access)

Fix:
includes/class_upload.php OLD

function ncrencode_filename($filename)
{
$extension = file_extension($filename);
$base = substr($filename, 0, strpos($filename, $extension));
$base = ncrencode($base);

return $base . '.' . $extension;
}
includes/class_upload.php NEW

function ncrencode_filename($filename)
{
$extension = file_extension($filename);
$base = substr($filename, 0, (strpos($filename, $extension)-1));
$base = ncrencode($base, true);

return $base . '.' . $extension;
}

Actually, now that I'm looking at the code somewhat more closely, it seems like this is the fix to the duplicate period issue, which is also a problem, albeit more minor (example here (http://kolmafia.us/showthread.php?3535-Wiki-Updates-%28masochism-%29&p=25227&viewfull=1#post25227)).

Update:

SVN Messages are trimmed and have any line breaks replaced with <br> at point of feed generation as RSS readers don't like the newline character.
Revisions number at begining of entry is now a link to the jar build in daily builds.
When creating entry title by adding first 80 chars of description to build number, if description contains a line break BEFORE 80 chars then stop title there.

i'd give it a couple of days to make sure I havn't got it totally wrong but fingers crossed this should be a fully functional rss feed for the svn log.

Added some new colour schemes to the forums. You either change them in your UserCP at the bottom of the General Settings (http://kolmafia.us/profile.php?do=editoptions) page or in the bottom left hand corner.

So far we have Gray Gremlin, Blue & Gold, Dark Rider and Emerald Sea. There are a few more I am going to add but this should give you all a nice set of choices to start with.

Not sure if the file name size limitation issue Bale mentioned was resolved or not. This thread (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?340201-100-Character-limit-for-file-name-downloads) may be helpful in solving that, but I'm not certain.

In the bugs report section, can all "Fixed" or "Not a Bugs" come up as green or something, with ones not yet confirmed as yellow, and confirmed ones as green or something? Just makes it easier to scan through the page.

A couple comments:

1) The new RSS changelog feeder has a slight bug. Here is one file from a recent submit:

M/src/net/sourceforge/kolmafia/textui/command/BasementCommand.java/src/net/sourceforge/kolmafia/textui/command/BasementCommand.java

That should be:

M/src/net/sourceforge/kolmafia/textui/command/BasementCommand.java

2) I'd like a couple more bug categories:

Bug - Cannot Reproduce
Bug - Waiting for Info

Both of those should be yellow, because they indicate that although the developers have looked at the bug, they haven't rejected the bug out of hand, but no fix will be forthcoming unless something changes.

3) What about duplicates? I considered asking for Bug - Duplicate and Feature - Duplicate, but what I'd really like to do is to be able to merge duplicate bug reports to the thread that they duplicate, since sometimes they have slightly different info. Can this be done?

hmm I didn't notice that!

The data in the database seems fine, so I guess its the handler which creates the feed, how does rss bot determine new feeds, by last build number? pubdate? or some kind of checksum? I guess what i'm really asking, is if I modify it will he redownload previous items? (and is this a problem!)

Edit (1)

Fixed, hopefully RSS bot won't have a fit! the pubdate field for the posts shouldn't change because its set to the svn commit time, but if its using a checksum then all posts will appear different.

Edit (2)

Rss bot redownloaded what looks like the last 10, sorry about that!

Any chance we can filter out the RSS Bot posts from What's New? I'm glad our devs are making so many improvements, but it's harder to find new posts from actual humans with all the revision notes showing up there. It's much easier to see all the recent SVN changes together on the daily builds page, or the SVN Changes forum itself -- I don't think they need to be included in What's New.

lostcalpolydude
03-21-2010, 06:49 PM
I would dislike that being changed. It's pretty easy to see all the posts in any forum together, but that defeats the point of the New Posts link. Now that I'm actually using it, I wouldn't want to have to read some stuff separately.

zarqon
03-21-2010, 06:54 PM
Right now, for me there are only four (4) regular posts on the What's New page. The rest are SVN updates and bug reports. That's not what I'm looking for when I click What's New in a forum. I want to see what people are actually discussing, not a bot-generated list which is available in at least three other well-organized places.

However, now that it's been nay-said, I suppose it's not worth defending further.

Bale
03-21-2010, 07:11 PM
On the right of each post is the forum it is in. You can click that, then at the top, click for the drop down to "mark this forum read". That's what I do when I don't want to deal with the updates.

I appreciate the request. However, I have found that I like manually checking all the new items in the RSS Feed and then, when that is done, use "What's New" for everything else. Having the SVN updates in What's New is all right with me since I only need the work around first thing in my day.
